Celebrated Zuck getting TIME's "Person of the Year" award by deleting my almost-completely-disused Facebook account. Every person on there whom I'm at all close to, I interact with via some other medium. The only function it was serving was for freaky exes from my past to find me, and I've had quite enough of that, thank you very much.

Wanna hear the best part? When you go to deactivate your account (which is different to deleting it permanently) it shows you the profile pics of a few of your friends (probably the ones you interact with the most) and says "Are you sure you want to deactivate your account? $FRIENDNAME1 will miss you. $FRIENDNAME2 will miss you."...etc.

Ahaha, it did that to me too. Though my account was so unused, that I guess it didn't have any good data, because the two names it gave me were people I was relieved to not be in contact with anymore (phew!)

i want to get rid of FB - but it's too useful for lobbying. I can get a large group of people repeating the same message, and politicians using facebook notice it all around them. I've also made contact with people who can help, e.g. I got to speak to someone on the board of the NZ Aids Foundation via initial contact on their facebook wall. They got more than a random email, they got to check my FB profile out in return.

It's too useful. I keep using it and thus encouraging others and i feel dirty now.

No, you've got a good reason to be on there, when you can bring about change with it like that. I'm fortunate in that I wasn't very invested in keeping it -- I signed up mostly because I have a few friends who are on FB but aren't on Twitter, don't have blogs, etc, but even so, I mostly keep in touch with these folks via phone & email anyway.

Despite not having given FB a whole lot of data to muck about with, I still feel quite relieved to be rid of it. =)

Indeed! Playing on people's emotions to turn a profit -- one of those things mega-corps do best! Cf cosmetics commercials, diet ads, acne products, ... >_<
